Our History
SINCE 1987
History of Peterson Winery
For almost 40 years, Peterson Winery has been producing wine in Northern Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. With a reverence for sustainable farming and a desire to produce wines that capture the essence of vintage and vineyard, Fred Peterson founded his eponymous winery in 1987.

HOW IT STARTED
Beginnings
Peterson Winery grew out of the vineyards that now supply it with grapes. That may seem unusual, but Fred’s background is not just in winemaking, but also in grape growing, or viticulture. That is why he refers to himself as a winegrower. For Fred, making great wine is about the grapes — where and how they were grown, what the weather conditions were, and how the vineyards were managed during the growing season.
Fred arrived in Dry Creek Valley in 1983, employed to find and develop world-class vineyard properties. It was an exciting time for Fred, being able to select ideal vineyard locations and then plant the appropriate grape variety and clone for each site. The vineyards Fred developed in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, including his own property on Bradford Mountain, began producing exceptional fruit. The next step was a natural one: Fred wanted to make wine from the fruits of his labor (Sorry about the pun, it was too good to pass up).
In 1987, all the pieces fell into place for Fred, and he launched Peterson Winery. For nearly twenty years, the winery was located in an old red barn tucked away in the vineyards off Lytton Springs Road. It was beautiful place to make wine, but the antique structure began to show its age.

For Fred, making great wine is about the grapes — where and how they were grown, and how the vineyards were managed.
A new chapter
New location, same terrific wines
In late 2005, Fred seized an opportunity to move into a newer facility at Timber Crest Farms on Dry Creek Road, in the heart of Dry Creek Valley. This more convenient location offered updated buildings with more office and cellar space, plus a comfortable tasting room for visitors to sample the wines.
Fred’s son Jamie became assistant winemaker in the summer of 2002. In 2006, after moving from the tiny red barn on Lytton Springs to Timber Crest Farms, Jamie was promoted to winemaker. A few years later, he added the role of general manager as Fred focused more on his estate vineyards and other aspects of the business.
For this father-son team, Peterson Winery remains all about the wines. With the low intervention winemaking philosophy of Zero Manipulation, coupled with superb grapes from high-quality vineyards, this team produces intensely rich, complex wines noted for their vibrant, intense fruit, considerable depth and fullness.
